Templates solve common pain points
Many engineers and scientists are experts at data analysis but translating complex data into persuasive narratives for diverse audiences takes time and effort that could be used for data analysis or other work. Grapher templates bridge this gap by providing a polished foundation to start with.
Faster, Easier Setup Eliminate trial and error. Templates provide a ready-made structure, letting you focus on analyzing your data.
Consistency & Compliance Ensure all your reports (e.g., long-term monitoring, regulatory, ect.) maintain the same high-quality visual standard.
Efficient Team Handoff Power users can create and hand off polished templates to newer team members, ensuring high-quality output without extensive training.
Reduced Restart Cycle Easily reuse complex formats months or years later, so you don't have to remember every detail of your settings.
Templates vs. Remap: Which Should You Use?
Grapher’s new Template Experience is great for turning raw data into publication-ready visualizations with virtually zero manual setup. However, if you have already spent time fine-tuning a specific project, the Remap Worksheets tool may be a more efficient way to swap in new data while preserving your custom adjustments. This section outlines how to choose the right workflow so you can move from raw data to a finished graph as quickly as possible.
Use a Template (GRT) when:
Starting Fresh: You have a new dataset and want to apply a complex, pre-defined style without manual setup.
Variable Data Ranges: Your new data has different scales (e.g., different years or sites), and you want Grapher to automatically adjust axes and labels to fit the new range.
Different Data Structure: Your new data may be laid out differently than your original data file, the template experience allows you to easily update which columns your data is in.
Sharing Standards: You are providing a "blank" starting point for colleagues or clients to ensure every report looks identical, regardless of the underlying data.
Data Security: You want to share a graph layout without including any proprietary or sensitive source data.
Use Remap Worksheets when:
Updating an Existing Project: You already have a finished
.GRFor.GPJfile and simply need to "swap out" the data source for a newer version (e.g., moving from January_Data.csv to February_Data.csv).Identical Data Structure: Your new data file is organized exactly like the old one (same column headers and data types).
Preserving Manual Tweaks: You have made specific manual adjustments to the current project (i.e. custom text callouts, specific axis overrides, custom data limits, etc.) that you want to keep exactly as they are.
Bulk Path Updates: You moved your data files to a new server or folder and need to point multiple plots to the new directory simultaneously.
| Feature | Template Experience (GRT) | Remap Worksheets |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Goal | Create a new graph from a preset style. | Update data for an existing graph. |
| Data Handling | Uses placeholder data to show graph features. Once the template is populated, the data can be stored in either project type: GRF (external link), GPJ (embedded) | Swaps the file path of currently linked data. |
| Data Structure | User is prompted to identify data columns, allowing for changes in data structure. | Requires the exact same data structure to update correctly. |
| Axis Behavior | Usually resets to "Auto" to fit new data. | Maintains existing axis limits and settings. |
| Best For... | Maintains existing axis limits and settings. | Recurring reports with the same layout. |

Golden Nugget : For the most efficient workflow, use the Template Experience to generate your initial, polished graph. Once that graph is saved as a project file (.GRF), use Remap Worksheets for daily or weekly updates. This allows you to get the initial speed of a template while gaining the "fine-tuning" control of remapping for all subsequent updates. |
Where you can find templates
Finding the perfect starting point for your project is easy. Whether you need a standard layout or a niche scientific or engineering visualization, there are three primary places to source templates:
Built-in Local Templates
When you install or update Grapher, a selection of sample templates is automatically added to your local drive. These are perfect for quick access without an internet connection. To access these templates just open Grapher and go to Home | Templates | Template Gallery.
Use the Home | Templates | Template Gallery to open the built-in internal Template Gallery
This will open the Template Gallery window, then just select the desired template and click the Open Project button.
Template Gallery window, select a template and click [Open Project] to open a template.
The Golden Gallery (Online) (TOP)
The Golden Gallery is our public-facing online library. It is the best place to find high-quality, pre-formatted templates designed by Golden Software experts. There you can find a wide range of styles, from simple scatter plots to complex Piper plots and mining logs. Just visit the Golden Gallery website to browse, search, and download .GRT files directly to your computer.
Your Own Organization (Custom Templates) (TOP)
One of the most powerful ways to use templates is by creating, customizing and sharing them within your team. Weather that starts with a Grapher file your team has already created and convert to a Template, or you start with something from the Template Gallery or Golden Gallery and customize it to fit your needs.
Using the Template Experience (TOP)
You can find professional, pre-formatted templates in Grapher via the Template Gallery (Home | Templates | Template Gallery) or online with the Golden Gallery. When you open a .GRT file, Grapher enters "template mode," and the file contains internal Placeholder Data to show you the final layout, but this data is not editable. Follow the steps below to load your own data:
Open your Template file.
Click on the Template menu in the ribbon.
Click on Template | Populate | Populate Template to open the Populate Template dialog.
In the Populate Template dialog, click the
button to load your Worksheets or Grid Files.
Grapher will attempt to match your new data columns to the plot variables. Review the assignments and make any necessary updates.
Review the preview window.
Click Complete to generate your final graph instantly.

Golden Nugget : The new-style GRT files are secure to share! They do not hold any references to your external data, only the visual placeholder data, ensuring your project data remains confidential. |
Creating Your Own Templates (TOP)
Weather you have a complex project file (.GRF) that you want to reuse with different datasets, or you have customized on from one of our Galleries you can easily turn it into a template:
Go to Home | Templates | Convert to Template.
Then click File | Save, and the file will save as a Grapher Template (.GRT) file.
Important: Software Version Requirement (TOP)
To use the new Template Experience and open .GRT files from the Template Gallery or Golden Gallery or created with the current version, you must have Grapher 26 or newer installed.
If you try to open a new template file with an older version of the software, you will see the following warning message:
Error: This file was created with a new version of Grapher. You will need to upgrade your version to open it.
Check your installed version and License Status
If you encounter this message, first check what version you have installed, then check what version your license is valid for, then check what steps you can take.
-
Check Your Grapher Version: In Grapher, go to File | About Grapher.
Your currently installed version of Grapher will appear in the About window.
-
Check Your License Status: Visit your My Products page to review what the highest version of the software you are eligible to use, along with your software maintenance or subscription details.
Upgrade your license (TOP)
If you are not currently using Grapher 26 and your software maintenance is less than three years expired you can renew your software maintenance. If you are more than three years past your renewal date, your software maintenance will permanently expire. This means a new license would need to be purchased to gain access to the benefits of software maintenance, including access to the current version. You can restart your subscription license at any time.
-
One-time License Resources
- Renewing Software maintenance: You can manually renew your software maintenance at any point before or after the expiration date. When you renew, you will get all new features, access to our superior technical support team, the ability to use pre-release versions, and much more.
