Installation Best Practices

Golden Software offers different license models.  Each license model has a slightly different installation process. If you have never installed a Golden Software product or wish to re-familiarize yourself with the process, here are some best practices for each available license model.

  • Ensure all of the software installation prerequisites are met before beginning.
  • Single user product key licenses must be activated under the end users computer account.
  • Ensure the installer can run with administrative privileges.
  • For concurrent license servers, firewall port 5093 must be open so clients can get request a seat.
  • MSI installers are available for remote deployment.

Choose the appropriate license type to view detailed installation and activation instructions:

  1. Single user license (serial number)
  2. Single user license (product key)
  3. Concurrent-use license

Single user licenses (serial number):

Voxler, Strater, MapViewer, and Didger are currently sold as single user licenses with a unique serial number. Surfer v13 and prior versions along with Grapher v12 and prior versions were also sold as single user serial number licenses. The recommended workflow for installing single-user licenses with serial numbers is below:

  1. Sign in to the computer as an administrator.
  2. Download the latest version of the software using the provided download instructions or by signing in to the Golden Software My Account portal.

  7. Enter your user's serial number in the Enter Serial Number dialog and click Next.

Single user licenses (product key):

In December 2016 we released additional licensing options for Surfer and Grapher. During this change, we began licensing the software with product keys instead of serial numbers.  Product keys are activated by connecting to our online activation server and each activation is tied to both the computer and the individual user.  The recommended workflow for installing single-user licenses with product keys is below:

  1. Sign in to the computer as an administrator.

  3. Right-click the installer EXE and select Run as administrator.
  4. If prompted, click Yes to allow the application to make changes to the computer.
  5. Complete the steps indicated in the InstallAware Wizard dialogs to complete the installation.
  6. In the final InstallAware Wizard dialog page, uncheck Run <software> now and click Finish.
  7. Sign out of the administrator account and sign in to the user's account on the computer.
  8. Right-click the Surfer desktop shortcut or the Start menu shortcut and select Run as administrator.
  9. Enter the administrator password, if prompted.
  10. Click Enter Product Key in the Licensing dialog.
  11. Copy/paste or enter the product key in the Enter Product Key dialog and click Activate.
  12. When the Activation is complete message is displayed, click OK.

Concurrent-use licenses:

Also referred to as network or floating licenses, concurrent-use licenses for Surfer and Grapher were offered beginning December 2016.  These licenses require the setup of a license server on the company network.  The software is then installed on all desired client computers and connected to the license server.  Each time the software is opened, a seat is checked out from the server, if available.  The recommended workflow for installing this software is provided below:

  1. Set up the license server by following the instructions in the article How Do I Set Up My License Server For Surfer And Grapher?
  2. Sign in to the client computer as an administrator.
