    Hi Olivier,

Currently, you can create polylines, polygons, points, etc in the georeferenced world by adding a base layer, and creating them in the base layer:

    1. Select the map you want to add them to and click Home | Add to Map | Layer | Empty Base.
    2. Right click over the empty Base layer in the Contents window and click Edit Group.
    3. Create the polylines and polygons as you want over the map. They'll be in map coordinates.
    4. When you are finished creating items, right click over the Base layer again in the Contents window and click Stop Editing Group.

That way, the drawn items are part of the map and are moved and scaled with the map. I will add a request to our suggestion file to streamline this process, such as automatically creating the base layer with the objects created if the map was selected prior to creating the objects.

    Thanks!
    Kari

    Hi Kari,

Thanks for this gimmick. The problem with this solution is nobody can think to it by himself. Georeference the polyline if a map is selected will improve that. But thinking of it, if we want everybody see the two options, why don’t put a switch option near the drawing tools like this?

And to go further, why don't merge digitizing with this tool. Digitizing can be a 3D polyline (only active for digitizing). That will be permit to have polyline on screen when we digitized (red cross don't suit me for border digitizing) and an automatic insertion in the map (right now we are obliged to insert it after digitizing it.

    Hi Olivier,

Yes, we could add an option there in the Insert group to either add the drawn objects to the map, or not to. I have added your comments to the suggestion file.

I will also add your comments about including the Digitize function with this!

For now, if you want to digitize a polyline and have it be part of the map after completed, then I suggest using the above process to add an empty base layer, edit the layer, draw the polyline, and stop editing the layer. If you want to export it, just select the Base layer in Contents, and in the Properties window, on the General page, click the Save File button to export the objects in the base layer to a file.

    Thanks!

    Hey there,

I tried to create polylines/polygones the exact way you described, with and without adjusting the coordinate system to the map i want to add the objects, BUT after clicking "stop editing group" the drawn objects are not visible anymore irrespective of changing the line properties or set the empty basemap into the foreground… do you have any hint for me?

Do you know what could have happened here? Maybe a problem with the uses cooridnate System? (Germany DHDN / 4-degree Gauss Krüger Zone 4).

    Best,

    Jakob

    Hi Jakob,

The lines could disappear if you added them to the base layer and then afterwards set the coordinate system for that base layer to be different than the map.

Before you add the lines, be sure you set the coordinate system for the Base layer (if you need to). Then you can start editing, add the polylines, and stop editing.

I hope that helps. If that doesn't work, can you please email the SRF file to me at surfersupport@goldensoftware.com? That would help me see where those polylines went.

    Thanks,
    Kari

    Hi Kari,

    thanks for your answer.

The coordinate system of the empty base layer is automatically in the map coordinate system of the map where i added that to, i have proofed that and just again ticked it to be sure there is no bug here...

But my polygons/polylines are still not visible...

I'll send you the file, hopefully you can tell me the mistake i haven found out by myself.

    Thanks!
