Grapher offers powerful tools for creating informative legends that enhance the clarity of your graphs. Customizing legends allows you to tailor their appearance and content to meet your specific needs.
Add, remove, or reorder entries in a legend
You may occasionally need to include plots in your Graph that you do not want included in the legend. For example, you may have a labeled function plot that illustrates a cutoff value. Since it is already labeled on the graph, it does not need to add clutter to the legend.
To edit your legend entries:
- Click the Legend in the Object Manager to select it.
- In the Property Manager, click the Entries tab.
- Click the Edit button next to Reorder/select entries.
- In the Reorder/Select Legend Entries dialog,
- Uncheck the box next to the plot name to remove it from the legend
- Check the box next to the plot name to add it to the legend
- Click on a plot name and then click the Up/Dn buttons to reorder the entries
The Reorder/Select Legend Entries dialog in Grapher enables you to add, remove, and reorder legend entries
- Click OK. The entries are added, removed, or reordered as specified in the legend.
Reorder entries in a plot legend (for class plots)
If your class plot uses text based classes, you can reorder the legend entries similarly to graph and multi-graph legends. Note that numeric classes are always displayed in numeric order and cannot be edited.
- In the Object Manager, select your Class Plot (Scatter, Ternary, Piper, or other class plot)
- In the Property Manager, click the Plot tab
- Click the Edit... button next to the Classes field
- In the Edit Classes dialog, ensure the Method field is set to Name
- Reorder classes by:
- Selecting a class and moving it with respect to the other by clicking the Up or Dn buttons
- Dragging and dropping individual classes to move them to a new position in the list.
The Edit Classes dialog in Grapher controls the legend entry order as well as the plot properties for each class
- Click OK or Apply to set the changes
Reverse the order of legend entries
Grapher orders legend entries in the same order as they were created in the Object Manager. The plot listed at the bottom of the Object Manager was drawn first in the graph and appears at the top of the legend.

You can adjust the size of each legend entry independently of other legend entries in Grapher.

- Click the Legend in the Object Manager to select it.
- Click the Graph Tools | Plot Tools| Detach Legend command.
The legend is broken apart into multiple new objects, including text, polylines, and polygons. Depending on what the legend looked like before, it may now look like this:
Once detached, the legend becomes several new objects, including text, polylines, and polygons.
