Getting Started in Surfer - Video Series

Welcome to the Surfer community! This collection of training videos will introduce you to the most important and commonly used features of Surfer.

The videos in this series cover the following topics:

Surfer User Interface

Before diving into any specific features it is important to take a tour of Surfer's user interface to understand how to access commands, create objects, and adjust properties.

Data Interpolation in Surfer

The next step in most map making journeys is to create a grid file or raster from irregularly spaced field data.  The grid file can then be used to create a number of different map types including contour, color relief, peaks and depressions, and watershed maps.

Surfer Contour Maps

Now that you know how to convert your field data into a grid file we can begin the mapping process.  We will start by covering how to create and edit a contour map, one of the most widely used and recognized maps types.

Surfer Base Maps

Base maps can be used to add contextual information to an existing map. They can also be combined similarly to GIS data platforms to illustrate important information on their own.

Combining Maps in Surfer

Now that you've created a couple different map types it is time to learn how to combine them properly so that they overlay and scale together.

Changing Map Properties

Now that you've learned how to create and edit individual map layer types it is time to explore and edit the properties belonging to the top level Map object.  These include the title, scale, limits, and coordinates used to display the map.

Coordinate Systems

The final piece of functionality it is important that all Surfer users understand is coordinate systems.  Coordinate systems enable you to combine data from different sources, with different source coordinates and have them overlay correctly without complex data manipulations
