Organize well data to import it into Voxler

KB no longer maintained - Voxler is a retired product. Golden Software retired products are still supported, but no longer receive new features or updates. Many of Voxler's features are moving to Surfer . Please contact support@goldensoftware.com with any questions.
To display your wells and sample data with the WellRender module, you will import a combination of collars information (X, Y, Z location of the well tops), log data, and trajectory information. Voxler uses measured depth values to plot the wells, and you can either import your data as multiple sheets containing collars, trajectory, and sample data - or as a single sheet with pre-computed down-the-hole X, Y, and Z values.

In order for well traces to be displayed, the WellData module needs to contain valid well paths. For a well to have a valid path, one of the following needs to be true:

  1. The data is imported with azimuth, dip, and measured depth.

  2. The data is imported with directional survey information. A path is then computed automatically.

  3. The data is imported with pre-computed X, Y, and Z values down-the-hole.

Log ASCII Standard LAS files and non-tabular format data files will be imported directly into the WellData module.

Multiple table approach with directional survey information

Trajectory information may be organized is using a collars table, directional survey table, and samples table. With this approach, each table is on its own sheet in a workbook or in separate files. To use this approach, the following data is required:

Collars Table

Directional Survey Table

Log/Samples Data

Well ID/Name

Well ID/Name

Well ID/Name

Top Easting (X) Location

Measured Depth

Log/Sample Data

Top Northing (Y) Location

Azimuth

Measured Depth (or From and To columns)

Top Elevation (Z) Location

Inclination

Total Measured Depth

The three sheets contained in the SampleWellData.xlsx file (located by default at C:\Program Files\Golden Software\Voxler 4\Samples) are an example of data organized in this way.

For more specific details on the setup of each table, refer to the articles below:

  • Hello,

I'm importing the way this article says, but it doesnt appear nothing when i load the WellRender.

I think i'm having issues with the XLS table, maybe with Elevation and Prof values.

  • Hello P.P.,

Are you using Voxler 4? If you add labels to your WellRender, do you see the well names? If you do see the labels and they're all clumped together, the issue is likely that the Z scale is much larger than the X,Y scale. If you do see the labels and they're spread out, the issue is likely that the Z scale is much smaller than the X,Y scale. In both of these cases, you can adjust the Vertical Exaggeration under the Viewer Window module in order to change the Z scale to match the X,Y scale. Since Voxler is a 1:1:1 viewer, these scales need to be similar to result in a viewable model.

For more information, see this webinar: Visualizing 3D Well Data In Voxler 4.

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

Should i do some conversion to turn the scale into 1:1:1? For example:

    https://support.goldensoftware.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003173793-How-can-I-get-a-scale-of-1-1-vertical-exaggeration-1-in-the-3D-view-when-my-Z-units-are-different-from-my-XY-units-e-g-lat-lon-or-feet-and-meters-

I tried to adjust through the View Manager, but it doesn't work

Also, i added azimuth and dip on my collars table, and it showed only the deepest well (30 meters).

    Thanks a lot!

  • Hello P.P.,

If your units are not at a 1:1:1 scale, and you can't or don't want to adjust the scaling using Vertical Exaggeration, then yes I do recommend converting your data units. The article you mentioned shows the conversions for a few specific units, but you can easily find more online.

When you say "I tried to adjust through the View Manager, but it doesn't work.", can you explain what isn't working? Are you unable to find the command? Are the wells still not displaying?

If things still aren't displaying, feel free to send your Voxler project file to voxlersupport@goldensoftware.com and we'll take a look.

    Thanks!

    Leslie
