- Click File | Import. Select your file and click Open.
- In the Import Options dialog navigate to Predefined | Geographic (lat/lon) | World Geodetic System 1984. Click OK.
- Click Map | Plot | Plot Properties.
- In the Coordinate System tab of the Property Manager click the Change button.
- In the Assign Coordinate System dialog, navigate to Predefined | Projected Systems | Regional/National | New Zealand | New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 (NZTM2000). Click OK.
MapViewer 7 and earlier versions do not offer this coordinate system, but you can simulate this projection using the regular Transverse Mercator projection and entering the False Easting, False Northing, Scale, Central Scale Factor, Central Latitude and Central Longitude projection parameters.
This site lists this information:
http://www.linz.govt.nz/data/geodetic-system/datums-projections-and-heights/projections/new-zealand-transverse-mercator-2000.
According to this site, the NZTM uses the NZGD2000 datum. We did not offer any datums specific to New Zealand in MapViewer 7, but NZGD2000 is essentially coincident with the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84), which is the reference system that is used by GPS receivers, hence no transformation is necessary.
If WGS84 is sufficient for your needs, the exact steps to convert a vector or raster file are:
- Click File | Import, select your vector or raster file and click Open.
- In the Import Options dialog, set the Projection to Unprojected Lat/Long. Check the box to Apply datum conversion and set the Datum to World Geodetic System 1984. Click OK.
- Once the image is imported, click Map | Convert Projection.
- Change the Projection to Transverse Mercator.
- Click the Settings button next to the Projection and enter the settings specified in the link above and then click OK.
- Toggle Apply datum conversion and set the Datum to World Geodetic System 1984. Click OK.
The projection is converted. You can now export the data to a new file or import additional files.
