Method 1:
Class scatter plots are designed to group data into bins and apply different properties to each bin. This method allows different symbols, colors, and sizes for each bin. The steps assume that the XY coordinates are in columns A and B and the class criteria is in column C. The class value can be either a number or text.
- Click the Home | New Graph | Basic | Class Scatter Plot (
) command.
- Select the worksheet and click Open.
- Click on the Class Scatter Plot in the Object Manager.
- In the Property Manager, click on the Plot tab.
- Click the Edit button next to the Classes command.
- In the Edit Classes dialog, change the Number of classes to the number of different bins in the worksheet.
- Set the bin method:
- For numeric bins: change the Method to "Equal number." The classes should be listed as 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc.
- For text bins: change the Method to "Name". The classes should list the text from the column.
- To change any of the values or the symbol color, style, or size associated with a class, select the class and click the Properties button.
- To change all classes at once, click the Symbol sizes... or Classes symbol... buttons.
- When all classes are showing the correct symbol, color, and size, click OK. Each class will show the proper symbol.
Method 2:
You could use the "class" column as a clipping column. This method allows different sizes, colors, and symbols for each class. To use this method, you would need to create as many line/scatter plots as there are classes in your worksheet. The steps assume that the XY coordinates are in columns A and B and the class criteria is in column C. The class value can be either a number or text.
- Click the Home | New Graph | Basic | Scatter Plot (
) command.
- Select the worksheet and click Open.
- Click on the Scatter Plot in the Object Manager.
- In the Property Manager, click on the Data Limits tab.
- Click the Set button in the Criteria field.
- In the Criteria dialog, check the box next to Use column criteria.
- Click the Add button.
- In the Enter Criteria Value dialog, type in the first bin value (such as 1 or a) and click OK.
- Change the column to Column C and click OK.
- All points with the bin value (of 1 or a) in Column C are displayed.
- Click on the Symbol tab and change the symbol properties to the desired style and color for the first bin.
- Click on the Plot tab.
- Click the Create button in the New plot field.
- Set the Y column to Column B (if it changed).
- Repeat steps 3-11 for the second bin. This sets the clipping and symbol process for each additional line/scatter plot for each bin value.
- Repeat steps 13-114, adding an additional line/scatter plot until all bins are displayed on the graph.
Method 3:
You could use the "class" column as a symbol indicator column. This method allows different symbols for each bin, but all of the symbols use the same color and size. The steps assume that the XY coordinates are in columns A and B and the class criteria is in column C. Note that the class criteria must be numeric for this method to work correctly.
- Click the Graphs | Create | Basic | Scatter Plot (
) command.
- Select the worksheet and click Open.
- Click on the Scatter Plot in the Object Manager.
- In the Property Manager, click on the Symbol tab.
- Change the Symbol variable to the column in your worksheet that has the class values in it. The symbols will change based on the value in the column. The value is determined by the Symbol number that is read from the bin column.
- To determine what value to use in the worksheet to get a particular symbol, click the Symbol option. In the list that appears, select a symbol and the symbol shape and number are shown. Use this number in your "bin" column.
