The Surfer grid (GRD) file format is binary and cannot be opened directly in Excel or Surfer's worksheet. You can convert any grid to an XYZ text file to open it in the Surfer worksheet, or in Excel.
Note: Excel's row limitations of 65,535 rows in Excel 97-2003 or 1,048,576 in Excel 2007 will cutoff any results beyond that row limits
Convert a Surfer grid to DAT
- Click Grids | Edit | Convert.
- In the Open Grid dialog, select your grid file and click Open.
- In the Save Grid As dialog, enter a new File name, change the Save as type to DAT XYZ grid (*.dat) or DAT XYZC grid (*.dat) and click Save.
Open the DAT grid file in Surfer:
- Click File | Open in Worksheet.
- In the Open dialog, navigate to and select your DAT grid file and then click Open.
Open the DAT grid file in Excel:
- Click Open in the welcome window and then click Browse.
- In the Open dialog, click on All Excel Files and select All Files (*.*).
- Navigate to and select your DAT grid file and then click Open.
- In the Text Import Wizard, click Delimited and then click Next.
- Check the boxes next to Comma and Space and then click Finish.
