Minimum Requirements for 2D and 3D Plots
The "Insufficient data" error can mean that Surfer requires a greater amount of data or that the present data does not conform to the expected structure. For 2D plotting, Surfer needs a minimum of two data columns representing the X and Y coordinates. For 3D plotting, at least three data columns containing the X, Y, and Z coordinates are needed. To ensure correct processing of XYZ data, you must have at least three unique data points, each specified by an X, Y, and Z coordinate, and these coordinates must be located in individual columns."
Fixing Text-Based Numeric Errors
Beyond the amount or layout of your data, the type of data is crucial. The "Insufficient Data" error can also occur if your X, Y, or Z values consist of text instead of numbers, or if your data file contains numerical information that has been incorrectly formatted as text. To resolve this, you can:
- Open the file in the Surfer worksheet.
- Highlight each column of numeric data, if the numbers are left justified in the cells they are formatted as text.
- Click Data | Data | Text to Number.
- Save the updated data file.
Other related "Insufficient Data" errors
- Collinear | There are four gridding methods in Surfer that support gridding collinear data. If you are encountering the error "Insufficient data (collinear)" in the Grid Data dialog, select one of those four gridding methods instead of the current selected gridding method.
