How can I make a residual map in Surfer?

To make a # order residual map in Surfer, perform these steps:

  1. Click Grids | New Grid | Grid Data, select the data file and click Open.
  2. Select Kriging as the Gridding Method.
  3. Click OK to generate the grid (and click OK when notified that the grid was created).
  4. Click Grid | Data again, select the data file and click Open.
  5. Select Polynomial Regression as the Gridding Method.
  6. Click on the Advanced Options button to specify the surface definition as shown below, then click OK.
    1. For 1st order residual, select Simple planar surface as the Surface Definition.
    2. For 2nd order residual, select Quadratic surface as the Surface Definition.
    3. For 3rd order residual, select Cubic surface as the Surface Definition.
    4. For 4th order residual, select User defined polynomial as the Surface Definition, and then enter 4 for the Parameters.
  7. Click OK to generate the grid (and click OK when notified that the grid was created).
  8. Click Grids | Calculate | Math.
  9. Click the Add Grids button.
  10. Select the first grid, hold CTRL on your keyboard and click the second grid. Click OK.
  11. In the function box, subtract the surface grid from the original grid:

  1. Give your Output Grid a name and click OK.

 

You can now make a map from this grid file.
