Find the slope of a terrain at a specific XY point in Surfer

To find the slope of a particular point, create a slope grid and find the Z value of the point(s) within the grid file.

  1. Create the slope grid file.
    1. Click Grids | Calculate | Calculus
    2. In the Grid Calculus dialog, select a map layer which uses the desired grid file from the Input Grid list or click the Browse button to navigate to and select your grid file.
    3. Choose Terrain Modeling | Terrain Slope.
      Grid Calculus Dialog Terrain Slope
    4. Change the Output Grid name and location, if desired.
    5. Click OK and the grid is created.
  2. Now you can find the Z value of the point. There are a few different ways you can do this:
    1. Create a map of the grid file (e.g. Home | New Map | Contour) if a map layer wasn't created at the end of the Grid Calculus operation, then move the cursor over the location and view the Z value in the application status bar.
    2. Or, create a map of the grid file (e.g. Map | New | Contour Map)if a map layer wasn't created at the end of the Grid Calculus operation, then right click over the map and click Digitize. Click on the XY point location.  The XYZ coordinates for the point are reported in the Digitized Coordinates window. If the Z value isn't reported, click Options | Include Z coordinate and click on the map again.
    3. Or, use the Grids | Calculate | Point Sample command, as described here.
