I see the message "The product key has been activated the maximum number of times", but I only have it installed on one computer. How can I activate my software?

The message "The product key has been activated the maximum number of times" indicates that the license has already been activated on two computers, or two user accounts on the same computer.

For Surfer 15, Grapher 13 and Strater 5

The following could cause you to see "The product key has been activated the maximum number of times":

  • An IT administrator installed the program for you and activated it from their administrator account.  You have to also activate it when signed in to your user account.  Each user on the computer must activate separately.
  • You have already activated two other computers with this product key.
  • You activated this computer, then reinstalled or reimaged Windows before deactivating.  Now you have an orphaned activation.
  • Something changed on your computer to cause the previously activated license to be invalid.  When you activate, a hardware signature is created using the MAC Address, the processor ID, and Windows UUID.  If any of those change, that activation is no longer valid and a new activation must be done.  The previous license becomes orphaned.

For Grapher 14 Preview

The following could cause you to see "The product key has been activated the maximum number of times":

  • You have already activated two other computers with this product key.
  • You activated this computer, then reinstalled or reimaged Windows before deactivating.  Now you have an orphaned activation.
  • Something changed on your computer to cause the previously activated license to be invalid.  When you activate, a hardware signature is created using the MAC Address, the processor ID, and Windows UUID.  If any of those change, that activation is no longer valid and a new activation must be done.  The previous license becomes orphaned.

Activating a product key on a computer will allow all users on that computer to run the program.

How to deactivate an activation

You can deactivate an activation from within the program, or using your web browser.
