One may want to resample their grid to be higher resolution for a variety of reasons such as wanting to see more detail, to match the resolution of another grid file, or to smooth edges of NoData.
Upsampling (increasing the resolution by resampling) in general does not actually provide more detail. If you want more detail, the best option would be to regrid the original data using a higher value for the # of Nodes in the gridding process.
If you can't regrid the original data, or don't need more detail, there are two ways to resample a grid to be higher resolution:
Method #1. Resample the grid with the Mosaic command
- Click Grids | Resize | Mosaic.
- In the Open Grid(s) dialog, choose your grid file and click Open.
- In the Grid Mosaic dialog, increase the # of Nodes or decrease the Spacing in the Output Grid Geometry section.
- If desired, change the Resample Method.
- If you would like to add the new layer to a specific map, click [New Map] and select the map, otherwise leave that option to add the layer as a new map object.
- The default new layer type is Color Relief. If you would like another type, click Color Relief next to New layer type and change to the preferred type.
- Give your Output Grid a name and click OK. The new grid is created.
Method #2: Smooth the grid using the Spline Smooth command
- Click Grids | Edit | Spline Smooth.
- In the Spline Smooth dialog, choose your grid-based map from the Input Grid dropdown list or click the Browse button to select your grid file.
- In the Method section, choose to Insert Nodes if you just wish to add additional nodes but don't want to reinterpolate the grid.
- In the Number Nodes to Insert section, choose how many nodes to insert between each set of adjacent nodes in the x (rows) and y (cols) directions.
