Why is recording a Fly-Through so much slower than previewing or playing it?

When recording a Fly-Through using the 3D View | Fly-Through | Record command, it may appear slow or jumpy. This is because the software is also saving the frame views to the computer, which uses up more internal memory than just visualizing the Fly-Through. When the recording is saved and played back as an AVI file, it will appear smooth - the same as how the Fly-Through appears when it is played within Surfer.
