The ribbon bar is fully customizable, allowing for full control over the interface. The customizable options include: minimizing the ribbon bar to maximize the plot window, removing ribbon bar tabs, and adding ribbon bar tabs.

Minimize the ribbon
Minimizing the ribbon will give Surfer the menu look that was used in previous versions. To do this, either right click anywhere on the ribbon bar and click Minimize the Ribbon, or click the arrow button in the top right corner of the application.

To find the commands on the minimized ribbon, click on the tab name to see the commands below. To maximize the ribbon bar, either right click on the ribbon bar anywhere and click Maximize the Ribbon, or click the arrow button in the top right corner of the application.

Remove ribbon tabs
Another customizable option is to display only the tabs and commands that you use. This will make it easier to find the commands you do use. To do this,

1. Right click on the ribbon bar and click Customize the Ribbon to display the Surfer dialog with the customize ribbon options.
2. To see the list of the available commands in Surfer, select All Tabs from the Choose commands from dropdown list.
3. To edit all persistent ribbon bar tabs, select All Tabs from the Customize the Ribbon dropdown list.
4. Now say that you always use keyboard shortcuts for the view commands like zoom in and pan. You can turn off the display of the View tab, which houses these commands. To remove the tab, uncheck the box next to View in the Customize the Ribbon list.
   
5. Click OK and the View tab is no longer displayed as a persistent tab.

Add ribbon tabs
Another option is to create a new tab with all of the commands you frequently use. To do this,

1. Right click on the ribbon bar and click Customize the Ribbon.
2. In the Customize the Ribbon list, click on the tab you wish your tab to show up after in the ribbon bar. So if you want your new tab to appear between Home and Layout, click on (but do not uncheck) Home.
3. Click the New Tab button below the list.
4. A new tab called New Tab (Custom) is added to the list of tabs in the Customize the Ribbon list, directly after the Home tab. Select this new tab.
5. Click the Rename button below the list of tabs, enter a new name, and click OK to rename the tab. For example, you can call this new tab "Favorites" and add all of your favorite commands to it for a one-stop-shop of your most frequently used commands.
6. The new tab has one default group, called New Group (Custom). Click on this group and then click the Rename button to rename it. For example, you can name this group "Map" and add to it all of the map types that you use.
7. Now, you can add the commands you want to display in this tab. Select All Tabs from the Choose commands from dropdown list.
8. Click the + signs to navigate to the commands you wish to add to your new group (for example Home | New Map | New Contour Map).
9. With the desired command selected, click the Add>> button between the two lists. This command (or group of commands) has now been added to the new tab.
   
10. To add another group to your layer, click the New Group button below the Customize the Ribbon list.
11. When you're done finalizing your tab, click OK. The new tab (Favorites) will appear in the desired location (between Home and Layout), with the designated groups (Maps) containing the selected commands (New Contour Map).
